The Nigerian Boy's Dream: Episode 5
"Amadioha"(meaning god of thunder) Emeka exclaimed in a serious meditative prayer mood and manner. the whole students in the prayer room became shocked at his prayer and opened their eyes to behold Emeka as he was doing his best to obey the request of the religious prefect. they all at that moment discovered that Emeka was never their type religiously(he was brought up in a traditional way).
The religious prefect immediately in a calm voice asked him to stop the prayer which he had already begun in his native language. Emeka thought that he actually broke a rule of the hostel morning worship not knowing that it was his prayer that actually led to the whole drama of him not being allowed to finish what he started.
At exactly 8:00am, classes begun. Emeka was earlier allocated to Jss1B which comprised of other students of his age range. he was happy and at the same time fearful of any embarrassment as he has been having since his entrance into the school environment the previous day till that morning.
The first subject on the time-table was English language . the topic for the day was " parts of speech" and the teacher drew the human vocal cavity on the black board. it was beautiful to Emeka's sight but little did he know that it was going to be an analytical exercise which is more of practical than just drawing.
After drawing on the board, the teacher turned to them and demanded that they all should draw and label the drawing as her's was without any labeling. this was to be a trial class work to test to see if they have any knowledge on that. they all drew and labeled to the best they know but Emeka was exceptional as his was without any single attempt of labeling. as the teacher passed his desk, she discovered that he had no single labeling on his drawing. she singled him out to come stand in the front of the whole class.
"Emeka name this" she said pointing to the board and referring to the tongue. Emeka stared and paused for a moment and finally he replied and said "Ile"(meaning tongue in Igbo language). the whole class burst into laughter. "shut up" the teacher warned and the class became quiet again with Emeka standing embarrassed as if he peed on his pants.
The teacher at this point discovered that Emeka has a serious problem with the basics of English language even though he could understand it a bit. Emeka was asked to go and sit down after being corrected. this correction he never forgot as he kept pronouncing "tongue" in his thoughts. this was because of the embarrassment.
As it was break time, he came outside the classroom just like the other students to have a nice time as well. as he sat on the stairs to the classroom, he saw some students running and panicking form under a tree and when he asked one of them, he was told it was a snake. he immediately stood up from where he was sitting and headed towards the tree where the snake was.
