My Survival Series Pt1: "The Escape"
This is based on a true life story of my survival from a terrorist invasion in a town called Mubi where i school in the North-eastern part of Nigeria.
On a beautiful wednesday(29th-oct-2014) morning, the school premises was so refreshing as many students were already done with their examinations. while i was cooking i received a phone call from a friend asking me whether am aware of a rumor which says the terrorist group Boko Haram are on their way coming into town. i said no. i thought that will be it until i heard a surveillance fighter jet hovering with such a loud noise which showed that the military were on a operation we couldn't comprehend. the panic grew deeper as we began hearing some gunshot far in town. we in the school thought it was the military scaring the terrorists away. many attempted to run away from the town but were prevented by the soldiers as that was risky. at exactly 2pm, students had already packed their bags waiting for the unexpected. we then saw a young soldier on uniform and on foot entering our school from behind the bushes. he claimed he was a survivor of an ambush by the terror group at a nearby town where they operated. immediately he left the school premises we heard a gunshot at a close range. students began running in different directions. the sound echo principle confused us as we can't tell the actual direction of the gunshot. but our ears were 100% alert. all of a sudden the gunshots became sporadic and we knew it was no longer safe to remain in school. i picked up my laptop and credentials alongside with my younger brother and we began an unplanned journey.
The bushy paths of the town outskirts became our friends as we(students, lecturers and town residents) sought for safety. there was still confusion on getting to a small town bordering mubi called Vimtim as we heard a gunshot in a location very close to school called barama. we crossed over the road and passed a river into an unknown land and it was there a great journey began.
In this journey i met with some friends and strangers as well. we became a survival team. we began trekking, wandering through farms and a little river. we then got to a small village but already there were much people there who are also running away from the attack. we didn't feel safe there so we decided to move on from there asking question of the path we could take to get to maiha town which will lead us to the state capital. while we were trekking, night befell us and we had no choice than to seek for a place to spend the night. we then got to another small village called "Yewa Husere" which seemed to be the last village between mubi town and the path to cameroun we saw a house with a tree in front of it. so we camped there. the owner of the house and his wife brought us some water and mats to rest with cause we were already exhausted. behold this man was a prisoner who broke free as the terror group attacked the prison yard in mubi. the night became cold and he asked us to come share his shelter with him. he was so kind to us. treated us as if we were his children.
